Fighting for Bus Passengers in West Yorkshire

Arrivas Financials

This is the breakdown of the figures provided to Metro by Arriva for the costs of running the old services and the costs to run the new botched services

Note the costs of the 935 to the 435 - very little difference, well only £12,339 to be precise, yes the 435 runs a longer route but have a look at the maps on Old vs New Route page we are talking a few miles difference between the old and the new route yet the 435 costs £12,339 less to run than the 935, how?

Costs & Savings

Arriva claimed that by making the changes and removing ALL the old route replacing them with the new 435 & X41 would save Metro the total sum of £112,101 in funding.

Yep mathemtically the new service is cheaper than the old we can all take one number away from another, but look closer...............

Arriva claimed that the old 448 was runing at a loss and wasn't worth running and recommended it to be withdrawn along with the 447 & X48, the keyword here is loss these routes they claim were a LOSS.

They also claimed that the 935 was running at a loss, there is that word again, LOSS

Questions to Ponder

  1. If the 448 was a commercial loss going through Skelmanthorpe, Scisset & Clayton West why withdraw the 935 & 448 then start the 435 that runs the same route (a combination of the 935 & the 448)?
  2. The withdrawn 935 Sunday service used to run every TWO HOURS at a cost of £17,710 yet Arriva can run the 435 on a sunday every HOUR running a LONGER route for less than double - Economy of scale is one thing but this looks dodgy! How can they run double the service for less than double the cost?
  3. We know Arriva made an error on passenger figures for the 935, are we to trust these figures or are they an "administrative error" too?
  4. Why not breakdown the running costs of the 447,448 & X48 in the totals, let is see how much t he 448 cost to run if they say it was running at a loss?
  5. How can we compare the old to the new properly the way Arriva have consoidated the totals?
  6. Why did it cost so much to run the 935 against all the other routes?
  7. Are the 935 costs weighted (i.e. some costs from 447,448 & X48 services could have been attributed to the 935) to make the 447,448 & X48 services seem cheaper to run so they could obtain the old Leeds Uni Contract?
